The curriculum for programs in Applied Exercise Science must include the performance domains and associated competencies listed below. Competencies that require attainment of didactic “knowledge” reflect cognitive didactic student learning objectives. Competencies that require demonstration of performance of a “skill” reflect psychomotor learning objectives.

Upon successful completion of the Applied Exercise Science (MS), students will be able to do the following under each domain.

• Domain I: Patient / Client Assessment
  1. Determine and obtain the necessary physician referral and medical records to assess the potential participant.
  2. Perform a pre-participation health screening including review of the participant’s medical history and knowledge, their needs and goals, the program’s potential benefits and additional required testing and data.
  3. Evaluate the participant’s risk to ensure safe participation and determine level of monitoring/supervision in a preventive or rehabilitative exercise program.
• Domain II: Exercise Prescription
  1. Develop a clinically appropriate exercise prescription using all available information (e.g., clinical and physiological status, goals and behavioral assessment).
  2. Review the exercise prescription and exercise program with the participant, including home exercise, compliance and participant’s expectations and goals.
  3. Instruct the participant in the safe and effective use of exercise modalities, exercise plan, reporting symptoms and class organization.
• Domain III: Program Implementation and Ongoing Support
  1. Implement the program (e.g., exercise prescription, education, counseling, goals).
  2. Continually assess participant feedback, clinical signs and symptoms and exercise tolerance and provide feedback to the participant about their exercise, general program participation and clinical progress.
  3. Reassess and update the program (e.g., exercise, education and client goals) based upon the participant’s progress and feedback.
  4. Maintain participant records to document progress and clinical status.
• Domain IV: Leadership & Counseling
  1. Educate the participant about performance and progression of aerobic, strength and flexibility exercise programs.
  2. Provide disease management and risk factor reduction education based on the participant’s medical history, needs and goals.
  3. Create a positive environment for participant adherence and outcomes by incorporating effective motivational skills, communication techniques and behavioral strategies.
  4. Collaborate and consult with health care professionals to address clinical issues and provide referrals to optimize participant outcomes.
• Domain V: Legal and Professional Considerations
  1. Evaluate the exercise environment to minimize risk and optimize safety by following routine inspection procedures based on established facility and industry standards and guidelines.
  2. Perform regular inspections of emergency equipment and practice emergency procedures.
  3. Promote awareness and accountability and minimize risk by informing participants of safety procedures, self-monitoring of exercise and related symptoms.
  4. Comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) laws and industry-accepted professional, ethical and business standards in order to maintain confidentiality, optimize safety, and reduce liability.
  5. Promote a positive image of the program by engaging in healthy lifestyle practices.
  6. Select and participate in continuing education programs that enhance knowledge and skills on a continuing basis, maximize effectiveness and increase professionalism in the field.

• A bachelor's degree in the biological or allied health sciences or a related field is recommended.
  • Undergraduate prerequisites include Anatomy and Physiology I & II and Exercise Physiology.
  • Undergraduate deficiencies may be addressed while working toward the master's degree (without credit earned toward the degree).
• Statement of professional goals.
• Two letters of recommendation.
• Additionally, applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 to be fully accepted into the Graduate Program. Students with a QPA of 2.7 – 2.99 will be considered for provisional acceptance. Graduate Record Exam scores may be requested.

In 2024-2025, the M.S. Applied Exercise Physiology program reported the following outcome data:

  Applications are accepted for the spring, summer, and fall semesters.
• How is the program delivered?
  Taught 100% online.
• How long will it take to complete the degree?
  Program includes 30 credit hours​. Most students complete in between 12-18 months.
• Do I need a degree in exercise science in order to apply?
  No- It's a great fit for students majoring in exercise science, biology, biomedical sciences, psychology, health and physical education, or health sciences​ as an undergraduate.
• Do I need to take the GRE in order to apply?
  No- the GRE is not required for admission.
• What career options when I graduate? 
  Your career options will be varied - but you’ll be in high demand!
